Review For Movie The Iceman
Even the always-watchable Shannon can't give much life to Kuklinski's two-dimensional presence: he's little more than a series of murders and pained looks.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

Shannon gets at his character's pent-up torment as well as his efficient disconnect. When his two worlds start to converge -- on his daughter's sweet 16th birthday, no less -- you feel for him.
Lisa Kennedy-Denver Post

A true-crime thriller directed with grit, gristle and punchy energy by Ariel Vromen, The Iceman is never less than fascinating, even if things get a little ham-fisted here and there.
Steven Rea-Philadelphia Inquirer

As the body count mounts, the movie begins to spin out of control, but Shannon and Vromen don't let it derail. Their focus keep things from melting down.
Adam Graham-Detroit News

Michael Shannon is an overpowering actor, and in The Iceman, the best that he can do is wrestle the movie around him to a stalemate.
Adam Nayman-Globe and Mail

It's a fascinating subject - the beast that lurks inside the family man - but the movie blows it.
Ty Burr-Boston Globe

It's as though they were in a rush to get so much killing in that they forgot all of the important elements that would make us care. As a consequence, a fascinating story and character have been flattened and turned into a hurried mess.
Jeff Beck-Examiner.com

'Big bad' with a side dish of bats--t crazy is the specialty of Michael Shannon, and so scarily good he is in mining this wheelhouse that one does not dare to complain about him repeating himself.
Michael Dequina-TheMovieReport.com

An exploitation film trapped in the stifling body of a respectable crime drama.
Eric D. Snider-Movies.com

The Iceman rests on the power of one hell of a performance from Shannon, with this monster of an actor playing a monster of a man with frightening intensity.
Matthew Pejkovic-Matt's Movie Reviews

The killings quickly begin to bleed into one another and it's sometimes hard to sort out the identities and roles of everyone involved.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

Ariel Vromen doesn't do so much in terms of the story (which spans 20 years, with corresponding hair fluctuations), but he seems to know his violence, and he's a true artiste when it comes to the queasy polyester ambience that holds this thing together.
Chris Chang-Film Comment Magazine

The film is able to capture its period setting, but the script is a collection of generic Mafia dialogue and cliched violent shootouts.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

The Iceman is dark and gritty but there's not enough excitement or tension to really pull you in.
Sam Bathe-Fan The Fire

Shannon's mesmerising performance has a Frankenstein edge to it.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Mistaking leaden atmosphere for gravitas, Vromen turns what could have been a vibrant period drama (it runs from the 1950s through to Kuklinski's arrest in 1986) into a sludgy ordeal ...
Alistair Harkness-Scotsman

A truly mesmerising turn by Shannon that allows him to cultivate all his ugly thoughts into one brooding menace ...
Lisa Giles-Keddie-HeyUGuys

As a chronicle of one of America's most infamous criminals, it's a chilling one. Much of that credit must go to Shannon however, who delivers inspired work sometimes in spite of the mostly conventional feature around him.
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

Much more involving than the usual hitman thriller, this film takes a deliberately personal approach to its characters that makes it unusually involving.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

Both compelling character study and well crafted mob thriller ...
Henry Fitzherbert-Daily Express

What makes it at all special is Shannon, who's terrific playing the human being behind the murderer, a man so psychopathic that he doesn't realise he's actually a monster posing as a man.
Damon Wise-Radio Times

The Iceman is a welcome adult thriller and its neat period touches will help to transfix many from start to finish.
Cheryl Mullin-Birmingham Post

Unfortunately, the movie runs out of things to say about its monosyllabic hero within a half-hour, after which the killings become repetitive.
Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK]

The Iceman is like a gangster's cold locker: all the nutritive items have been taken out to make room for the dead bodies.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

Nothing else in Ariel Vromen's movie is remotely on Shannon's level, from the plodding, Scorsese-clone script to the needlessly lifeless editing and cinematography.
Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph

Suspect barnets aside, there's not a lot to take away from this by-the-numbers genre piece.
Adam Woodward-Little White Lies

Review For Movie Storage 24
A London self-storage facility provides an appropriately eerie location for Storage 24, an amiably routine genre pic that combines sci-fi and horror elements.
Charles Gant-Variety

This low-budget Alien knock-off set in a London self-storage facility inspires more claustrophobia than chills.
Frank Scheck-Hollywood Reporter

Derivative and dorky, Storage 24 still entertains more often than it exasperates.
Jeannette Catsoulis-NPR

A monster from a familiar mother.
Nick Schager-Village Voice

Feels like the germ of an idea with stuff lifted from 'Alien' et al and bolted on.
Nigel Floyd-Time Out

If you're in the mood for a quick and fun monster flick, Johannes Roberts' low budget entry does the trick.
Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed

completely works for what it is, and its low-budget nature keeps things grounded
Kevin Carr-7M Pictures

The headache you'll get from the first half of the flick is not worth the meager thrills you'll get from the second.
Scott Weinberg-FEARnet

Certainly an acceptable matinee distraction and an effective creature feature, at least in rare moments where the monster actually resembles a monster and not a PS3 glitch.
Brian Orndorf-Blu-ray.com

More chilling than the horror of the alien's close-quarters assault is the rank misogyny that more than offensively underscores the Melrose Place-grade human drama.
Ed Gonzalez-Slant Magazine

While sluggishly starting in a fashion horror/sci-fi fans are all too familiar with, Storage 24 takes an unexpected turn for the awesome with bouts of ooey-gooey creature horror - but still leaves us wanting a tad more.
Matt Donato-We Got This Covered

B-movie fodder ideal for low-expectation late evening TV viewing.
James O'Ehley-Sci-Fi Movie Page

Literally feels like it's 24 hours long.
Graham Young-Birmingham Post

An Open Letter to Young British Filmmakers...
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

The film is, as Clarke's hooded Kidulthood character might say, 'well gash, innit'.
Shaun Munro-What Culture

[C]ross[es] the line into misogy-wah! territory, and conflate[s] an attack by an alien monster with an attack by mean ol' b*tches on innocent men who didn't do nothin' to deserve it.
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

Makes the most of a simple premise and single location setting, the cast are uniformly good, and the impressive creature delivers nastily effective splatter chaos.
Alan Jones-Radio Times

With Johannes Roberts directing, this apocalyptic piece of cheaply made science fiction wends its way through an absurd plot with some energy.
-This is London

Storage 24 is destined to be packed into a cardboard box and forgotten about by everyone.
Grant Rollings-Sun Online

Never quite scary enough to be a horror, nowhere near funny enough to be a comedy and not exciting enough to be an action movie, but stitches all three elements together into a satisfying whole.
Jordan Farley-SFX Magazine

Storage 24 is solid, entertaining but unremarkable genre fare, littered with two-dimensional characters and predictable twists.
-Liverpool Echo

Review For Movie Red 2
Ultimately, it's popcorn nihilism without the big laughs that helped distract from the casual approach to life and death in 'Red'.
Anna Smith-Time Out

This is a likable, almost gentle comedy and also a violent action film about the possibility of a nuclear bomb going off in a major city.
Mick LaSalle-San Francisco Chronicle

Willis is self-evidently capable of kicking the asses of men considerably younger than himself. But at some point shouldn't he consider an alternative pastime?
Christopher Orr-The Atlantic

Ridiculously action-packed and just as endearing, Red 2 is why we go to sequels despite our well-earned cynicism about studios churning them out.
Lisa Kennedy-Denver Post

It's nice to see oldsters cavorting in kaboom movies, but a little of this stuff goes a long way.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

What's interesting about 'RED 2' is that, not only is it better than its predecessor, it is miles better ...
James Rocchi-MSN Movies

A highly-watchable but stilted sequel that serves as a complacent sequel to the fun original.
John Hanlon-Big Hollywood

Much of the originality has faded and Morgan Freeman's absence is keenly felt, but the end result is still a fun, exciting adventure.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

Red 2 fails to capture the fun of the first film, but manages to hold on to its weaker traits, such as a bloated runtime and an inundation of mindless action sequences, turning this into a rather forgettable affair.
Jeff Beck-We Got This Covered

The cookie-cutter action sequences - car chases, fireballs, shoot-outs - are so-so and whereas the first film had a giddy cheekiness to it, the vibe here just feels forced, a common trait of sequels we really weren't hankering for.
Jim Schembri-3AW

Who knows if teenagers will appreciate this type of actioner? No matter. They get plenty of films designed for them. You go, gramps!
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

The basic formula of the freefall of action, laughs and casting class of the 2010 first film is the same, but everything is less spontaneous, a little more forced and a tad overcooked this second time around... Mirren comes out best
Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile

RED 2's support cast (including the new additions) are punching hard for this sequel to be as fun as the original; however the diluted globetrotting and Willis' clear 'pay-check' performance make you wish they'd retired this series after the original.
Blake Howard-2UE That Movie Show

RED 2 plays it pretty safe, carefully emulating the style and tone of its predecessor, so if you enjoyed the first one, RED 2 should tick the same boxes for you.
Tim Martain-The Mercury

Silly but unapologetic entertainment.
Rebecca Barry-Flicks.co.nz

About the best - and maybe the worst - that can be about RED 2 is that it is an exceedingly safe pick.
Philip Martin-Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

While we applaud the minds behind Red 2 for making a film for adults in a sea of movies for kids and teenage boys, they didn't actually make a good film for adults.
Kimber Myers-The Playlist

The Expendables meets The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel isn't an obviously winning formula.
Guy Lodge-This is London

Smart, breezy spy action, with an of-the-moment vibe that takes it post-post-9/11 and into the Wikileaks era of global politics.
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

Willis looks so tired, so lacking in vitality, that it's tempting to suggest he follow his character's lead and retire.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

[A] tiresome sequel ...
Philip French-Observer [UK]

The plot is all too generic, right down to the ticking-bomb climax. You can easily imagine it being taken off the shelf and handed to a bunch of younger actors with barely a tweak.
Jason Best-Movie Talk

The trick to RED 2's success is its willingness to allow the actors to roar through all their greatest hits at the loudest possible volume.
Donald Clarke-Irish Times

The plot might not add up to much, but there's plenty of fire-fights, punch-ups and bristling one-liners to go round a cast so vast they could have called this The Extendables.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Like the first one, it's played for laughs in-between bouts of mayhem; most of the gags are off-target, though Mirren's Nancy Mitfordesque assassin gets a pretty good kill ratio.
Andrew Pulver-Guardian [UK]

Retired, extremely dull.
Sophie Monks Kaufman-Little White Lies

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Review For Movie Pacific Rim
It is possible to applaud Pacific Rim for the efficacy of its business model while deploring the tale that has been engendered -- long, loud, dark, and very wet. You might as well watch the birth of an elephant.
Anthony Lane-New Yorker

A ridiculously entertaining (and often just plain ridiculous) monster-robot movie that plays like that "Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots" game from the 1960s.
Richard Roeper-Richard Roeper.com

Its visual achievements notwithstanding, Pacific Rim's greatest breakthrough may be that it's the first Hollywood blockbuster to sport a title less descriptive of its plot than of its intended market.
Christopher Orr-The Atlantic

It's as if Del Toro neuro-linked with a robot and then couldn't figure out how to work the controls -- and so watched impotently as the machine made the major creative decisions.
David Edelstein-New York Magazine

There are long sequences in this movie that merit that most overused of terms: "Awesome."
Rene Rodriguez-Miami Herald

Del Toro is reveling in blockbuster clichés at the same time he's pounding them into the pavement, and somehow that self-consciousness lets us all in on the joke.
Tom Long-Detroit News

From a pure fan-boy perspective, this film packs in a great deal of energy without feeling like a stale Michael Bay film. Guillermo del Toro mixes playful energy with outstanding effects.
Wesley Lovell-Cinema Sight

Bro, it comes down to this: if you can't turn the brain meat off and sit back and enjoy Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi and Idris Elba beating the crap out of some monsters then, dude, you're the monster.
Rob Boylan-Orlando Weekly

Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim is awesome, scary, weird, exciting, exuberant, and ridiculous -- basically everything you want from a sci-fi action movie.
Cammila Collar-TV Guide's Movie Guide

Feels like it's always struggling to break through the screen-if only to grab you by the scruff of the neck and drag you in.
Max Nelson-Film Comment Magazine

There was a time when I would have considered Pacific Rim the greatest movie ever made. But then I turned 12.
M. Faust-ArtVoice

Pacific Rim is the perfect example of how to make an effective summer blockbuster. It has heart, brains and enough action and explosions to shock and awe just about anyone.
Jeremy Lebens-We Got This Covered

A blockbuster of substance and depth...
Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed

The plot is well designed considering how silly the movie really is. Credit that to Guillermo Del Toro. He obviously put a lot of though into the picture, but it's still a basic action film, and the selling point is giant robots battling giant monsters.
Forrest Hartman-Reno Gazette-Journal

If it sounds kinda fun, please know it is, with those aforementioned scientists (TV faces Charlie Day and Burn Gorman) creating some laughs with their goofy nature of oneupsmanship.
John Urbancich-Sun Newspapers of Cleveland

...a punishing ordeal that just might mark the nadir of the modern big-budget blockbuster...
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

Impossível deixarmos a sala de projeção sem uma sensação clara de caloroso retorno à infância.
Pablo Villaca-Cinema em Cena

Fueled by an ambition that channels enthusiasm for characters and narrative details above the high-octane action, and driven by visual effects that are a compliment to those traits rather than a distraction.
David Keyes-Cinemaphile.org

the attention to social detail, as well as the film's visual punch, makes Pacific Rim more than a monsters-on-the-rampage movie--although it is certainly that, as well.
James Kendrick-Q Network Film Desk

It's del Toro's squarest, least interesting film. It's as if the sense of fun and wonder collapsed beneath the gargantuism of the budget, in an esthetic equivalent of the square-cube law that makes the story's monsters impossible in real life.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

It's stupid but I liked it.
Bob Grimm-Reno News and Review

Monster action with minor smarts...the fatigue factor sets in early, especially without much humor and only corny asides available to balance the onslaught.
Bruce Bennett-Spectrum (St. George, Utah)

It's the movie Transformers should have been, treating the lizard-brain appeal of a fight between humongous critters with the respect it deserves.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

A movie that both distills and perfects the tradition from which it's drawn.
Michael Burgin-Paste Magazine

Giant robots and ugly sea monsters stave off disaster for Del Toro's latest
Robert Denerstein-Movie Habit

My inner 10-year old thought "Pacific Rim" was totally cool, engaging and entertaining. My current, outer 45-year old thinks it best not to think too hard about the plot.

Review For Movie Fill the Void
This is an extraordinary first film, nerve-tingling in its intensity, and assembled with a finesse and control even the great Austrian director Michael Haneke might envy.
Trevor Johnston-Time Out

Beautiful and mysterious, the[se] first glimpses are an ideal primer for the Israeli film, which never rushes to spell out the meanings of its subtle and quiet moments.
Stephanie Merry-Washington Post

It's an artful, character-driven drama that constitutes a minor miracle of empathy.
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Burshtein creates a one-of-a-kind portrait that nonetheless transcends its setting, and even its worldview; the dynamics are global.
John Anderson-Newsday

Burshtein has achieved a gripping film without victims or villains, an ambiguous tragedy drawing on universal themes of love and loss, self-sacrifice and self-preservation.
Peter Keough-Boston Globe

[Burshtein] vividly depicts a clannish culture that is likely to feel foreign and perhaps off-putting to generations that came of age in a progressive post-feminist era.
Susan Wloszczyna-Chicago Sun-Times

Few films in recent memory better capture the heartbreak of loss, the agony of indecision or the burden of familial duty.
Tom Clift-Concrete Playground

An intelligent and moving examination of the possibilities of personal freedom within the strict confines of religion and tradition.
Mark Kermode-Observer [UK]

There is perhaps something ultimately undeveloped about it, but the film is a well acted, well presented piece of work.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

Fill the Void is as well-versed in the rules of matchmaking as a Jane Austen novel, and it bends them as artfully as wicker.
Robbie Collin-Daily Telegraph

Its last five minutes are so extraordinarily enigmatic, you're certain the subject of innocence, guilt and attraction has been addressed on a deep level.
Antonia Quirke-Financial Times

A fascinating and emotionally gripping drama with a sharply written, understated script and a pair of terrific performances from Hadas Yaron and Yiftach Klein.
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

A nuanced kitchen-sink depiction of an Israeli Hassidic community which zeroes in on the dilemma of an 18-year-old girl named Shira.
Sophie Monks Kaufman-Little White Lies

With honesty and sensitivity, this Israeli drama takes us into an unfamiliar subcuture, letting us experience aspects of life in an Orthodox Jewish community that we've probably never even imagined before.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

A warm, watchful slant on marital mores in an ultraorthodox Jewish community.
Kevin Harley-Total Film

In the end, it's hard to determine whether Burshtein is celebrating or critiquing the insularity and strict traditions of the community that she herself joined in her 20s - but presumably that's part of the point.
Hannah McGill-The List

Although it lacks a little of the emotional heft of Haifaa al-Mansour's work, it's a well acted and delicately told tale.
Angie Errigo-Empire Magazine

..heir funny hats and weird hairdos don't camouflage the recognisable human characteristics we readily understand. For me, that is the film's most enduring and most important message
Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile

Eventually reveals itself to be a sort of Jane Austen romance -- a tale of matchmaking and marriage motivated by the ritual and decorum of Haredi Judaism in modern Tel Aviv rather than by the social strictures of 19th-century England.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

Burshstein has managed a small miracle with his gentle film ... . A movie about matters of faith that manages to be neither condescending nor smug ... a surprisingly accessible and satisfying experience.
Philip Martin-Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

Using the advantage of personal familiarity with an insular religious community of Haredi Jews in Tel Aviv, Rama Burshtein has created a small jewel of a narrative.
Marjorie Baumgarten-Austin Chronicle

It's the movie's attention to detail that sells it, especially because the humanity of all the characters shines through.
Ken Hanke-Mountain Xpress (Asheville, NC)

Buhrstein, whose assuredness belies the fact that this is her first film, captures this dilemma mainly through Shira's eyes.
Sean Means-Salt Lake Tribune

A frustratingly bland look at the customs of a complex subculture.
Josh Bell-Las Vegas Weekly

The elder Renoir is filled with a new, wholly unexpected energy when a young girl miraculously enters his world. Blazing with life, radiantly beautiful, Andrée will become his last model, and the wellspring of a remarkable rejuvenation. At the same time, Jean also falls under the spell of the free-spirited young Andrée. With its warm colors and sweet streams of light, its love of both the countryside and the human form, it makes you dream of painting. Or making movies. Or just luxuriating in the brilliance.
Tom Long-Detroit News

Thanks to ace Taiwanese cameraman Mark Ping Bing Lee, it conveys the inspirational qualities of sun-dappled light and rosy flesh.
Trevor Johnston-Time Out

"Renoir" doesn't get much beneath the surface - but, good God, what a surface.
Ty Burr-Boston Globe

For those who just want to float away on waves of beauty, "Renoir" is a boating party.
Joe Williams-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Stately to a fault, the film is not enough drama, too much still life.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

One would expect a film about French artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir to look beautiful, to be shot in warm, sumptuous colors. And one would not be disappointed in Gilles Bourdos' "Renoir."
Bill Goodykoontz-Arizona Republic

Beautiful-looking but largely boring...There have been some terrific films about artists, but this isn't one of them.

Michel Bouquet's wonderful characterisation of Auguste Renoir remains the shining achievement of this delicate, reverential and sometimes gobsmackingly beautiful film

Most films labor furiously, trying to infuse every frame with passion. Renoir is content to sit still, creating effortless beauty in the style of its subject, painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir.
Cameron Meier-Orlando Weekly

Thanks to a remarkably unselfconscious performance from Christa Theret as Andrée Heuschling, we see the young model bringing the ageing impressionist painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir back to life - and ultimately inspiring his son Jean to become a filmmaker.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Gilles Bourdos' biopic is plenty pretty but the drama is a still life.
-Scotsman

Overly dependent on the beauty of its Edenic setting, which is lushly photographed by Taiwanese cinematographer Mark Ping Bing Lee.
Tom Dawson-The List

You would need a soul of potash not to savour the delicious fauna and flattering southern light. But the film never gets far beyond the decorative.
Donald Clarke-Irish Times

The bright, warm sunlight of the Cte d'Azur casts a golden glow over a film set in the summer of 1915.
Allan Hunter-Daily Express

The story falters when it runs through its very traditional, even hackneyed arcs ...
David Jenkins-Little White Lies

This gives a new meaning to Truffaut's phrase le cinéma du papa.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

There is just something unsatisfying about Renoir, as a feature that promises so much and yet delivers so little.
David Sztypuljak-HeyUGuys

A film of lazy days, sleepless nights and mellow moments that will likely test the patience of those unwilling to resign to its unhurried pace.
Neil Smith-Total Film

Rated R for 'art-related nudity.' By that standard, shouldn't the Louvre be Adults Only?
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

A portrait of the artist as an old fart.
Rick Kisonak-Film Threat

You'll never look at a Renoir work the same way again, whether it's on a canvas or, in the case of Jean, celluloid. And for that, we can thank Andree Heushling, a beauty who inspired beauty in a most beautiful way.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

Renoir is one of those movies where all the pieces are in place for something intriguing and insightful. To that end, the film fails.
Bill Gibron-PopMatters

Renoir is great at capturing some of the details of daily life within this unique household and conveying an Impressionist atmosphere on film, but as far as telling us a story, the film is a washout.

Movie Overview For Renoir

The Côte d’Azur. 1915. In his twilight years, Pierre-Auguste Renoir is tormented by the loss of his wife, the pains of arthritic old age and the terrible news that his son Jean has been wounded in action. But when a young girl miraculously enters his world, the old painter is filled with a new, wholly unexpected energy. Blazing with life, radiantly beautiful, Andrée will become his last model, and the wellspring of a remarkable rejuvenation. Back at the family home to convalesce, Jean too falls under the spell of the new, redheaded star in the Renoir firmament. In their Mediterranean Eden - and in the face of his father's fierce opposition - he falls in love with this wild, untameable spirit... and as he does so, within weak-willed, battle-shaken Jean, a filmmaker begins to grow.

Review For Movie Blue Jasmine
Lives constructed on pretense can only stand for so long. Watching them collapse is appalling but undeniably entertaining.
Colin Covert-Minneapolis Star Tribune

A sharply observed, post-economic crash comedy-drama that boasts a formidable performance by Cate Blanchett and addresses such pertinent real-world concerns as class, gender and corporate criminality in urban America.
Geoff Pevere-Globe and Mail

You have to dig deep in Allen's back catalogue to find a single performance as affecting and well-judged as the one Cate Blanchett delivers.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

It's narratively uneven but the occasional lapses of focus are rescued by Cate Blanchett's riveting lead performance.
James Berardinelli-ReelViews

This also benefits from one of the strongest casts he's assembled in years: Cate Blanchett is exceptional in the lead, and there are strong supporting turns from Alec Baldwin, Sally Hawkins, and (in a surprise dramatic turn) Andrew Dice Clay.
Ben Sachs-Chicago Reader

Jasmine resembles one of those '50s wives -- widowed or dumped -- who find themselves with nary a skill to survive, or at least not in the manner they'd grown accustomed.
Lisa Kennedy-Denver Post

Blanchett's performance is fascinating. She's an Ingmar Bergman figure yanked straight out of Tennessee Williams.
Matthew Korfhage-Willamette Week

Jasmine is a good movie, one of Allen's best in years, but the draw here is Blanchett, whose performance takes an off-putting character and makes her surprisingly, um ... not quite on-putting, but riveting.
Edward Johnson-Ott-NUVO Newsweekly

Allen creates a clever and intriguing intersection of lives, relationships and anxieties, all balancing on the ready-to-pop balloon of Jasmine's psychoses.
Clint O'Connor-Cleveland Plain Dealer

Blanchett embraces the Blanche DuBois-like nature of the character yet manages to reach Vivien Leigh-like levels of histrionics in much more subtle and naturalistic ways.
Alistair Harkness-Scotsman

In its basic situation can be heard the distant clang of A Streetcar Named Desire, though it's neither pastiche nor reprise, just a quietly respectful tribute.
Anthony Quinn-Independent

[Woody Allen's] spin through Tennessee Williams territory, where he has never gone before, seems fresh in the hands of an expert cast.
Lawrence Toppman-Charlotte Observer

The whole is less than the sum of its parts, though some parts (especially Blanchett's performance) are well worth watching.
Jim Lane-Sacramento News & Review

There is all this talent -- and so little reason for it in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine.
Bruce Kirkland-Toronto Sun

Eficaz ao não fazer concessões no retrato de uma criatura cuja beleza e elegância externas ocultam uma mulher irremediavelmente estragada por dentro.
Pablo Villaca-Cinema em Cena

Blanchett, wielding a stiff cocktail in one hand and a bottle of anti-anxiety pills in the other, gives her character a skillful shove from neurotic towards psychotic.
Emma Myers-Film Comment Magazine

I can't credit Allen overmuch for acknowledging, at this late date, a culture of criminality too blatant to ignore; but I admire, and am moved by, his decision to look at his new subject obliquely, through the experience of an enabler of the crimes.
Stuart Klawans-The Nation

The movie is a near-perfect capture of a woman on the edge of a nervous breakdown without going off the deep end into a farce.
Monica Castillo-Paste Magazine

Insightful, squirmingly funny and boasting an absolutely unmissable performance from first time Allen collaborator Cate Blanchett.
Tom Clift-Moviedex

While the film may hold some viewers at arm's length, the performances are worthy of stand-up-and-cheer ovations all round.
Mark Kermode-Observer [UK]

Woody Allen's latter films just seem to get better and better...another A-grade movie to join Match Point, Midnight in Paris and Vicky Cristina Barcelona...a superb Cate Blanchett does some of her best film work to date.
Jim Schembri-3AW

The result's highly effective on a human level. If only the film had been set in the real world.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

Smart, sophisticated and bound to win an Oscar nod or two, 'Blue Jasmine' is an outstanding Woody Allen movie about the fall from grace of a Hamptons socialite who begins to unravel after her husband loses a fortune.
Linda Cook-Quad City Times (Davenport, IA)

[Woody Allen has] captured an Oscar-contending, tour de force performance from the great Cate Blanchett.

Watch Beware Of Mr. Baker Best Movies life time

At home with rock 'n' roll monster Ginger Baker, Cream's legendary scarlet-maned, hell-raising drummer. This no-holds-barred, sad, and hilarious portrait of the man referred to as rock's first great drummer (and perhaps still its best) lets him tell his own story, intercut with footage of his continent-hopping life, from London to L.A., Nigeria, Italy, South Africa, and (way) beyond. Baker may have broken the mold musically, but his violent, dyspeptic mood swings, fueled by a multi-decade heroin addiction, went a long way to making him persona non grata even among the music greats who still revere his work. Eric Clapton, Johnny Rotten, Charlie Watts, and Lars Ulrich, Baker's 4 wives, and 3 grown children all have something to say about him: "He's a force of nature," "he's the greatest drummer any of us had ever heard," "he's mad," and "he's fairly consistently horrible" are just a few of them.

Review For Movie Beware Of Mr. Baker
It's refreshing to watch a music doc, especially one with such intimate access to its subject, in which barely anyone is unreservedly polite about the person in question.
Dave Calhoun-Time Out

Ginger Baker has been revealed as a major talent, an innovator and an unlikely survivor. And a not very nice guy.
Tom Long-Detroit News

Ginger Baker is, and was, a train wreck. Yet this film, like Baker's onstage playing, is always riveting, and something you can't look away from.
Charles Cross-Seattle Times

"Beware of Mr. Baker" is comprehensive, if somewhat overly glowing.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

The takeaway: great musician, deficient family man, taxing friend and bandmate, excellent documentary subject.
Gary Goldstein-Los Angeles Times

This is warts and all, with the emphasis on the warts.
David Lewis-San Francisco Chronicle

An entertaining doc on the volatile but great jazz and rock drummer, the controversial London born Ginger Baker.
Dennis Schwartz-Ozus' World Movie Reviews

The constantly gripping film is adroitly assembled.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

With no preconceptions, I found this to be one of the films of the year - an extraordinary story about an even more astonishing talent.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

Bleakly entertaining, Beware of Mr Baker neither eulogises nor patronises its subject; one day (though possibly not soon), Baker may take it upon himself to say thanks.
Charlotte O'Sullivan-This is London

It's a broadly forgiving portrait of an impossible, irascible talent, who seems to have treated life much like his instrument.
Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph

We are always being told that books and movies have to have "sympathetic" lead characters - well, here's a documentary that does very well without one.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

An interesting character study interspersed with classic rock, jazz and Afrobeat clips. Nothing more, but certainly nothing less.
Mark Asch-Little White Lies

Entertaining documentary about the notoriously cantankerous drummer...
Michael Bonner-Uncut Magazine [UK]

It's all insanely enjoyable.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

Searingly honest and ultimately deeply moving, this is a fascinating portrait of notoriously antisocial former Cream drummer Ginger Baker, now 73 and still raging.
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

A juicy slice of rock history.
Patrick Peters-Empire Magazine

A fascinating rockumentary that pays tribute to its subject's impressive musical odyssey, while illustrating the enormous emotional costs he's incurred along the way.
Tom Dawson-Total Film

By turns sad and darkly comedic, but never less than mesmerizing -- a moving and morally conflicted portrait of a true questing spirit.
Brent Simon-Shared Darkness

This straightforward yet insightful documentary pays tribute to its subject without resorting to hagiography.
Todd Jorgenson-Cinemalogue.com

I watched Beware of Mr. Baker and longed for the time when rock was good, musicians were gods, and good god, the parties and the playing were species of their own.
Matt Pais-RedEye

Movie Overview For Beware Of Mr. Baker

Ginger Baker is known for playing in Cream and Blind Faith, but the world's greatest drummer didn’t hit his stride until 1972, when he arrived in Nigeria and discovered Fela Kuti's Afrobeat. After leaving Nigeria, Ginger returned to his pattern of drug-induced self-destruction, and countless groundbreaking musical works, eventually settling in South Africa, where the 73-year-old lives with his young bride and 39 polo ponies. This documentary includes interviews with Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Carlos Santana and more. Beware of Mr. Baker! With every smash of the drum is a man smashing his way through life.

Watch Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street Best Movies life time

Stephen Sondheim's award-winning musical thriller comes to the big screen in this adaptation directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen, Timothy Spall, and Alan Rickman. Embittered at having been wrongly imprisoned and determined to seek vengeance against his accusers due to the grim fate that befell his wife and daughter while he was incarcerated, ex-convict Sweeny Todd (Depp) returns to his hometown and opens a modest barber shop. The one thing different about Todd's shop, however, is that no one who walks in for a trim is ever seen again. Subsequently branded "The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" by the frightened community, Todd continues with his murderous exploits with a little assistance from his amorous accomplice, Mrs. Lovett (Bonham Carter) -- whose popular meat pies secretly have a most unsavory ingredient. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Review For Movie Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
This is grand-scale studio-work at its most beguiling.
Joshua Rothkopf-Time Out

A considerable achievement even if, on balance, it's more of a Tim Burton phantasmagoria than a Sondheim fantasia.
Peter Rainer-Christian Science Monitor

As unsettling as it is riveting. Even Sondheim aficionados will see the story with fresh eyes, unless those eyes are covered.
Gail Pennington-St. Louis Post-Dispatch

The movie may substitute Grand Guignol for laughs at times, but it's spectacularly stylized -- each throat-slashing exceptional -- persuasively sung, and imaginatively adapted for the screen.
Bob Mondello-NPR.org

It's as if Burton was born to direct it.
Moira MacDonald-Seattle Times

A thoughtful, sincere and moving film, buttressed by a fine, central performance by an actor at the top of his form.
Wally Hammond-Time Out

This magnificently realized musical from Stephen Sondheim contains the right blend of emotional pathos, stunning visuals and accessible songs.
Ben Rawson-Jones-Digital Spy

It's gross but will it gross? Burton and Depp's cannibal musical is an especially acquired taste - Oliver! reimagined by Eli Roth. Brave, brutal... ballads?
Jamie Graham-Total Film

Looks incredible, like a moving painting, but it's absolutely mediocre...
Felix Vasquez Jr.-Cinema Crazed

Sweeney Todd may just be that rare musical with broad appeal to audiences who might normally say they don't care for the genre.
Ian Buckwalter-DCist

Elevates a rollicking gorefest into a dark work of art
Fernando F. Croce-CinePassion

This is a remarkable piece of work for people who like their genres all mashed together in a meat grinder.
Jordan Hoffman-UGO

Sweeney Todd is a throat-slasher of a motion picture. It creates a new genre -- the slasher musical. Adapted from the Tony-winning Broadway musical by Stephen Sondheim, it's the tuneful tale of cutthroat's revenge.
Tony Macklin-Fayetteville Free Weekly

Filming a major Broadway musical has always been trouble for moviemakers; none of them seem to work.
Dan Callahan-Slant Magazine

[Burton's] vision of a dark and smoggy nineteenth century London, with muted colors, is perfect for the music and the story.
Scott Nash-Three Movie Buffs

Depp's staggering performance perfectly merges the story's humour, horror and romance into a serious punch to the gut.
Rich Cline-Shadows on the Wall

One of the best movies of his career.
David Medsker-Bullz-Eye.com

Burton was born to film this strange and spooky chamber piece.
James Christopher-Times [UK]

The film suffers from a relentless emphasis on bland, thoroughly forgettable musical numbers whose sameness inevitably lends the proceedings a distinctly oppressive quality.
David Nusair-Reel Film Reviews

It is grand guignol with music that will bewitch the uninitiated -- and probably outrage those who know and love the score, especially when it's sung decently.
Janos Gereben-Entertainment Insiders

In all honesty, neither Depp nor Carter possess stage-quality voices. Instead, both muster emotional performances that sell the parts without selling the music.
Sean O'Connell-Reel.com

Depp does about as well as anyone other than Len Cariou could with his one-note character. Bonham-Carter gives Mrs. Lovett a game stab, but she suffers from all that freaky makeup and lacks the voice of an Angela Lansbury.
Jean Lowerison-San Diego Metropolitan
